Tattoos & Graffiti
Urban art is an expression of our society reaching
out with acts of personal gestures and connections; statements of connection, power,
ownership, heritage, emotions, bound up in paint and constructions personalizing our spaces
in the city. The more rooted to a space the more we tend to personalize it with these
gestures. Tattoos are more personal messages of experience, memory, and maybe
membership.
These personal messages in graffiti are spontaneous or planned works of artistic construction while tattoos and body art are the ultimate dedication of visual expression. There is a very strong connection between the emotion which is applied to a wall, and that, which is infused on our bodies. As well, there is a strong difference between that which is crafted that can be walked away from, and that which we apply to ourselves, which then becomes our self.
My search here is with our connections to the spaces around us and those acts which are expressions of ourselves in a society loud with millions of voices all reaching out to be heard, all attempting to express our own individuality, One statement in millions or billions is not to be considered as a hopeless endeavor, but having the independence to self- express is empowering to ourselves as we touch those lives around us and share our memories and stories through our acts of expression.
